Military coups are one of the most explicit grounds on which fundamental rights and freedoms are completely eradicated and human rights violations are attempted to be justified by being normalized. Seizing the elected power which is one of the main elements of democratic states of law through military, anti-democratic and unlawful means and destroying the constitutional order causes great damage to social  structure and leads to human rights violations.

As a matter of fact, the September 12 Military Coup, which took place 43 years ago today, trampled on human dignity, causing people to lose their lives, be subjected to systematic torture and ill-treatment, usurp the right to freedom and security, and caused many fundamental rights and freedoms to be ignored or intentionally be driven far behind the stage of advancement. During the aforementioned anti-democratic period, we witnessed a time in which Turkey was moved away from the ideals of democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. Contrary to libertarian orders and presumption of freedom where rights and freedoms can only be limited as an exception in line with "principles of legality, proportionality, necessity and certainty," an authoritarian tendency was strengthened; a time almost when prohibition was the norm and freedom was subject to permission was experienced.

Over the past period, there were attempts to civilianize and democratize the Constitution prepared by pro-coup mindset at every opportunity. There were many amendments made to the Constitution either by the means legislative organ or through referendums. However, the need for a completely civil and liberal constitution in line with the ideality of human rights still remains on the agenda today.

Our Institution, main mission of which is to protect the right to equal treatment of persons on the basis of human dignity and prevention of discrimination in exercising the legally recognized rights and freedoms, with the understanding that all coup attempts targeting democratic political order violated the guarantees for fundamental rights and freedoms, we hope that the human rights violations and trampled on human dignity caused by the coup will not happen again on behalf of our country and nation on the 43rd anniversary of the coup of September 12, 1980.
