United Nations marks 1 March as "Zero Discrimination Day" so that persons or groups are not discriminated against due to differences such as social class, age, nationality, race, religion, language, sex, political and philosophical opinion, ethnicity and disability, treated unjustly, unequally, and extrajudicially, and to encourage promoting and advocating their rights in all areas; and announced this to the entire world.
Principle of equality and prohibition of discrimination which complements it, are some of the fundamental elements of international human rights law, and they are regulated and guaranteed in regional and international human rights starting with Universal Declaration of Human Rights and European Convention on Human Rights. The Declaration states that all are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law, and everyone should be able to enjoy all human rights rights without distinction of any kind. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development puts equality in the center of global efforts to end poverty, guarantee human rights and protect the world with the promise of "leaving no one behind." Within this scope, 10th of the Global Goals is "Reduced Inequalities."
In addition to this, there are still no comprehensive and effective regulations on preventing discrimination and ensuring equality in many countries as of 2023. Without the necessary legal regulations, discrimination finds its way into all areas of life on countless basis. In addition to legal arrangements, it is important to carry out policies and practices fit for the purpose.
In the National Legislation, in Article 10 of the Constitution with the provision of "All individuals are equal without any discrimination before the law, irrespective of language, race, color, sex, political opinion, philosophical belief, religion and sect, or any such considerations. [...] No privilege shall be granted to any individual, family, group or class. State organs and administrative authorities are obliged to act in compliance with the principle of equality before the law in all their proceedings," and in Article 3 of the Law no. 6701 on Human Rights and Equality Institution of Türkiye with the provision of "it is prohibited under this Law to discriminate against persons based on the grounds of sex, race, colour, language, religion, belief, sect, philosophical or political opinion, ethnical origin, wealth, birth, marital status, health status, disability and age", prohibition of discrimination and principle of equality are regulated.
Human Rights and Equality Institution of Türkiye, main mission of which is to guarantee the right of people to be treated equally on the basis of human dignity, and to prevent discrimination in the enjoyment of legally recognized rights and freedoms, continues its work effectively with the goal of protecting and promoting human rights on the basis of equal citizenship understanding within the framework of this institutional mission. On the occasion of 1 March, Zero Discrimination Day, we wish for a world without any kind of prejudice, discrimination and violence, and where every citizen enjoys rights on the basis of equal rights
