Vasip ŞAHİN
President of the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Türkiye
Vasip Şahin was born in 1964 in the province of Bayburt. After completing his primary, secondary, and high school education in Erzincan, Şahin graduated from the Faculty of Law at Istanbul University in 1985.
Şahin began his public service career in 1986 as a district governor candidate in Erzincan and spent one year in the United Kingdom in 1987 conducting research and studies.
He served as District Governor of Küre in Kastamonu and Pütürge in Malatya; Deputy Governor of Muş; District Governor of Mudurnu in Bolu and Kızılcahamam in Ankara; and Deputy Governor of Düzce.
In 2003, Şahin served as Legal Counsel at the Ministry of Interior and as Head of Department at the General Directorate of Civil Defence. From September 2005 to August 2008, he served as Deputy Director General of the Directorate General of Provincial Administration. On 5 August 2008, he was appointed Director General of Provincial Administration.
He served as Governor of Düzce from 2010 to 2012, Governor of Malatya from 2012 to 2014, Governor of Istanbul from 2014 to 2018, and Governor of Ankara from 2018 to 2026.
By the Presidential Appointment Decree published in the Official Gazette dated 30 April 2026, Şahin was appointed President of the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Türkiye.
Vasip Şahin is married and has three children; he speaks English.
